When I enter my personal contributions my taxes owed goes up instead of down. What's up with that?

You have to go all the way through the HSA interview. If your contribution were in Box 12 with a code W on your W-2 - - do not enter them again. You only enter HSA contributions you made outside your payroll deductions - - which is extremely rare. Go back through the interview - don't re-enter contributions from your w-2 and answer the questions about your HDHP plan.
