Question

Hi! My son is doing his ride-share taxes on Turbo Tax and is stuck on the question is his vehicle a car for hire? We get conflicting answers googling it.

Yes, Uber is considered a taxi service.  This means his vehicle is a car for hire.

We subsequently got an answer from a professional tax person at TurboTax, and their answer was no, Uber is ride-share, not vehicle for hire, although they consulted back and forth for some time before issuing it. Apparently this is a much-contested question.
