Do i have to declare a new house that i bought abroad, or is it exempted? How do i claim deductions on a mortgage?

Yes, you are able to claim foreign mortgage interest. The mortgage needs to be a secured debt on a qualified home in which you have an ownership interest.

Begin by entering the information as though you received Form 1098:

  1. Choose Deductions & Credits on the left tab (under Federal)
  2. Select "Show more" for "Your Home"
  3. Click "Start/Revisit" next to "Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098)"
  4. Enter the lender information
  5. On the following screen, choose "The seller is financing this loan and we didn't receive a 1098"
  6. Complete the information on the screens that follow

You don't have to enter the house if you don't want to.
