Question

How about if we paid for a medical expense for a parent? Can we include that as a medical expense if we don't claim them as a dependent?

You can claim medical expenses for a parent if that parent is your dependent or cannot be your dependent only because:

1.He or she received gross income of $4,300 or more in 2020;
2.He or she filed a joint return for 2020; or
3.You, or your spouse if filing jointly, could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2020 return.
