Question

How can I claim for Foreign Tax Credit for taxes paid to another country? They are only letting me do it for dividends. This was not a dividend income.

Part of my income was foreign-based labor and taxed in that country and in the US, so I should be able to claim credit for that right?

Please, make sure that you entered the earned income under the foreign income section before trying to claim the Foreign Taxes paid.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “foreign income”
  3. Click on “Jump to foreign income”
  4. Answer "Yes" to "Did You Make Any Money Outside the United States?" and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you received a W-2 for your foreign work then please verify that you selected "Worked outside the U.S." on the "Do any of these uncommon situations apply to this W-2?" screen after you entered your W-2.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “W-2”
  3. Click on “Jump to W-2” and you should see the “Here's your W-2 info” screen
  4. Click on "Edit"

Please be aware, if you are claiming the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion for the income then you cannot claim Foreign Taxes paid on that amount.
