The method in which to deduct travel depends on the purpose of the travel.

If you are self-employed

  • Self-employed individuals generally take their travel expenses as a deduction against self-employment income

To enter travel expenses related to self employment

  • Login to your TurboTax online account
  • Click Take me to my return or pick up where I left off
  • In the search box (located in the upper right hand corner) type schedule c
  • Click the Jump to schedule c link that appears in the search results.
  • Answer Yes to Did you have any self-employment income or expenses? or Did you have any income and expenses for a business in 2017? and follow the onscreen instructions until it asks about travel expenses.

If you are employed by someone else (W-2 income)

  • Any unreimbursed employee expenses are claimed as an itemized deduction on Schedule A, limited to amounts above 2% of their adjusted gross income (AGI).

To enter employee travel expenses in TurboTax:

  • Login to your TurboTax online account
  • Click Take me to my return or pick up where I left off
  • Click the Federal tab (on the left side)
  • Click Deductions & Credits; scroll down and click edit/add next to Job Expenses for W-2 Income
