If you are self-employed, then your vehicle expenses will be entered as part of Schedule C Business Income and Expenses.  Use the following TurboTax article as a guide and look for the section labeled 'Business Vehicle Expense' to enter your vehicle-related expenses.

Where do I enter my self-employment business expenses, like vehicle mileage?

If you are an employee receiving a W-2 for your work, then your expenses would be entered on Form 2106.  However, employee business expenses on Form 2106 are no longer deductible on your Federal return as a result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.  You can still enter the information as part of the Federal return to be transferred to your state return since certain states do still recognize the deduction.  Use the following steps to get started with the 2106:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “2106” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 2106
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 2106” link
