Does your accessory dwelling unit qualify as a Home Office Deduction?

If you're an employee working remotely rather than an employer or business owner, you unfortunately do not qualify for the Home Office tax deduction (however, it is still available to some as a state tax deduction). You may qualify for a Home Office Deduction as a deduction against self-employment income.

In TurboTax Online Self-Employed follow these steps.

  • Click on Federal down the left hand side of the screen.
  • Click on Income & Expenses across the top of the screen.
  • Under Your income and expenses you will find Self-employment income and expenses.
  • Click on Edit/Add or Start to the right.
  • TurboTax will ask questions and guide you in establishing your entity.
  • At the screen Here's your info, scroll down to Add expenses for this work.
  • Scroll down and click the circle to the left of Home Office.
  • Continue.
