How do I file MI homestead property tax credit for prior years?

I have used turbo tax for the last decade. I have never filed for a Michigan homestead property tax credit as my income was above the threshold. I am now 68 and have found out that at 65 the threshold increased. "Seniors are entitled to a homestead property tax credit equal to up to 100% of the amount their property taxes exceed 3.5% of their income, up to $1,200. " I would like to know how to file for the credit for tax years 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Amend your prior year state returns for the MI Homestead property tax credit.

  • Amend your Michigan return only after your original return or claim has been filed and processed.
  • If you are claiming a refund on your amended return, you must file it within four years of the due date of the original return (including approved extensions).
  • For example, to amend a 2018 return that was not extended, the amended return must be received by April 17, 2023.

Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you filed your amended state return and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency.
