    Zillow often has the value of homes sold in the past or ask a realtor for advice.

    Why do you need the value as of a past date? If it's because you inherited the house, you should get a retroactive appraisal from a licensed professional appraiser. Anything else is just a guess, and won't carry much weight with the IRS.
