Question

How do you split itemized deductions between husband and wife for state purposes if you're taking the standard deduction on the federal return?

In Montana, you can file married separate and itemize your deductions.  If one spouse itemizes, the other spouse must itemize.  I'm filing joint on the federal return and taking the standard deduction.

You can split the costs based on who pays the expenses or if you have joint accounts, you would split them 50/50 unless you have a written agreement stating otherwise.

If an expense, like a medical expense, applies to only one of you, then that person would claim the expense. You cannot claim an expense that is attributable to the other spouse only on your return.
