The excess employer HSA contribution is calculated based on your HSA information from your W-2 (box 12, code W) and the answers you provide in the HSA section.

If what you are seeing looks wrong to you, make sure you answer all of the questions in the HSA section so that TurboTax can make the calculation correctly.

To find the HSA section:

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  2. Select Deductions and Credits toward the top center.
  3. Scroll down or expand the list to find Medical.
  4. Expand the section and click Start to the right of HSA, MSA Contributions.
  5. Continue through the rest of the section.

If after doing that you still have questions, respond back to this thread with more detail about what you are experiencing.

under the tax rules contributions you make out of your paycheck (reduces box 1 on w-2) and employer contributions are all reported as code W on W-2 and flow to the 8889 as employer contributions.
