How to add itemized charitable contributions to state return

Information flows from the federal return to the state return.   Add them in the federal and the software will take them to the state return.   You do not mention your state, so we do not know if charity donations have any effect on your state refund or tax due.

I believe California allows you to claim itemized deductions on the state return even though you claim the standard deduction on the federal return. So it should work as we described above.

You enter the charitable contributions in the federal return even if your federal itemized deductions are less than your standard deduction. They will not be used in the federal return, but will still flow to the state return if applicable.
