How to deal with children I can't claim every year

I share custody of my oldest child. We switch off on years when to claim her. How will that affect my receiving the child tax credit?

So far, it appears that in situations like yours, the advance payments are going to the wrong person. The best approach would be to opt out of the advance payments using the Advance Child Tax Credit Portal. If that is not done, the situation will be reconciled on the tax returns next  year - the person who received advance payments to which they were not entitled will be debited for them, and the person who is entitled to the credit will receive it.
