Did someone else claim one or more of your children?  Was your e-file rejected?

Someone else claimed my dependent and my return was rejected

If someone else claimed your dependent already, then your e-filed return will be rejected.  Print, sign and mail your own return which claims your dependent.  Mailed returns are processed differently by the IRS.  It will take some time (maybe even up to a year) but eventually the IRS will contact both parties and sort out who could rightfully claim the dependent.  The person who wrongfully claimed the dependent will face repayment of refund $, plus penalties.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

xmasbaby0 is correct.

If someone else claimed your children on their income tax return(s), you won't be able to e-file.

  • You'll have to mail in your income tax return(s).
  • You'll most likely get a letter from the IRS requesting proof that you can claim the children on your income tax return.
  • The other person will also get a letter from the IRS.

If, on the other hand, TurboTax is not giving you the credits relating to your children, go through the TurboTax questions and review your responses. You may have inadvertently answered a question that is not allowing you to claim them as dependents:

  1. Sign into your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Pick up where I left off or Continue
  3. Select My info from the left side menu.
  4. On the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to each child and Edit.
  5. On the Who do you support? screen, select My child
  6. Review your responses, especially the Date of birth and Citizenship.
  7. On the Tell us more about XXX living situation last year question, review Did your XXX pay for more than half of his/her living expenses and other support? If you answered "yes", your child is not your dependent if he/she paid for more than 50% of his/her living expenses. By answering "yes", TurboTax would not allow you to claim the HOH filing status.
  8. Continue through the TurboTax interview and review each question to make sure you answered it correctly.
  9. If after reviewing your responses, TurboTax is still not allowing you to claim your children, please review the TurboTax FAQ Who can I claim as my dependent?
