Hybrid Tax Credit BMW 330e

Good evening,

I just about finished my turbotax online filing and entered the VIN and information for the 2021 BMW 330e I purchased July of 2022. Turbotax approved my tax credit based on the VIN but I'm not sure if it's legit. I bought the vehicle from the dealership who owned the vehicle as a loaner with 14000 miles on it. My question is this, am I considered the original owner since I purchased from the dealer? Since it was approved through Turbotax, does that mean that I can go ahead and claim it? Does it mean that the credit was never claimed? Or is it possible that it was claimed and that I'm being issued credit a second time? Would it go through if the VIN was previously approved? I would love to claim the credit since it was approved, but am fearful of doing the wrong thing if it was already claimed. I hope this makes sense and thanks for the help.

A dealership is not allowed to claim the credit.  The credit is only allowed if the vehicle is for personal use and not for resale. So, yes, you would be eligible to take the credit.

Although the program let you claim the credit  only the IRS  can actually allow/approve it based on the VIN  ... only they know if it had already been used.  So the IRS will let you know for sure after they process your return.

Thank you. So should I go ahead and apply the credit and if it turns out it has been claimed, will the IRS just deny the claim? @Critter-3
