Question

I am an IN resident but interned in CA for the summer. I stayed in hotels the entire time I was there. Can I claim a deduction on that? Can I have multiple tax homes?

As to whether you can deduct these expenses, it depends on how you were paid. Most likely you will receive a Form W-2. Unreimbursed expenses related to W-2 employment income, such as hotels to work an internship, are not deductible under the new tax law.

If you receive a Form 1099-MISC (which is unlikely for an intern) you would be able to deduct the expenses such as a hotel related to working that contract. This is done on Schedule C and would require you to upgrade to TurboTax Self Employed.

Can you have multiple tax homes? Not at the same time. In your situation, you are a full-year resident of Indiana, and have non-resident income from California. An intern, like a student, is not considered to live in another state if they are only there for an internship. It is a temporary absence.
