Question

I am getting 1 error on my state (MN) Schedule M1SA: "Home mortgage interest should not have a value since federal Schedule A, lines 8b and 8c are blank" How do I fix it?

I have been going back through the deductions & credits sections pertaining to my home mortgage interest on the federal return side to figure it out but am having trouble. I verified I correctly entered the amount of my home mortgage interest paid.

Minnesota allows you to itemize and file Schedule M1SA even if you didn't itemize and filed federal Schedule A.  Even if you aren't itemizing on your federal return you will need to enter all your deductions on the federal part of the return.  TurboTax transfers data from your federal return to your state return. If the information  on your federal return is incomplete or incorrect, your state return won't be complete or correct either.

Before you begin troubleshooting your state return, go back through your federal return  and make sure everything is correct.  Go over the Deductions and credits section on your return to enter the mortgage interest.

Once you're done, select the State Taxes tab and review the state section. Pay close attention to the information, especially if you made changes to your federal return. There might be new sections that need to be completed.

Sometimes changes made to your federal return won't transfer if you override info on your state return. If this happens, delete your state return and start over.
