If you are self-employed (you don't get a W-2), those expenses go on your Schedule C.     How do I enter expenses for my business?    Training courses can be deducted as miscellaneous expenses on Schedule C.    The laptop is an asset and is reported in the Assets/Depreciation section of your Schedule C in TurboTax.    You may be able to deduct the cost as an expense if you make certain elections on your tax return.   Business Assets and Depreciation.   TurboTax will walk you through depreciation when you go through the Assets/Depreciation section.

If you are an employee (you do receive a W-2 for your income), job-related expenses are not deductible on your federal tax return.    Some states allow these credits - if your state is one of them, here is how you enter them - they go to federal Form 2106.

If you are not self-employed and don't file Schedule C, the training class may qualify you for the Lifetime Learning Credit.   To enter this credit in TurboTax, follow the instructions below.

You can search for education in the search box and use the Jump to education link to get there..  OR   If you are using TurboTax Online, click on Tax Tools (left menu), then Tools.    Choose the first blue box - Topic Search.

Start typing Lifetime Learning Credit to highlight it in the list.  Then click on GO.   You don't have to have received a Form 1098-T to take the credit.
