You may be able to deduct the sales tax for both.

For most people who itemize, the income tax deduction offers the bigger tax break.

But, the sales tax deduction will probably benefit you more if you:

  • Don’t pay income tax in your state (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, or Wyoming)
  • Made a major purchase and paid a lot of sales tax
  • Paid more in sales tax than income tax
  • Lived in a state with high state and local tax rates

If we’re helping you with your taxes this year, we’ll figure this out for you in Deductions & Credits. You’ll see which deduction saves you the most money based on your situation.

When we ask if you bought any major items while living in your state, answer Yes if you purchased:

  • A motorized vehicle (car, truck, RV, motorcycle, etc. – sorry, no mopeds).
  • An aircraft, boat, mobile home, or manufactured home, but only if you paid the general sales tax rate (otherwise it doesn't apply).
  • Building materials for a major renovation or substantial addition to a home, if you paid the general sales tax rate yourself or your contractor was authorized to purchase these materials per your instructions or building contract.

Otherwise, answer No, even if the items you purchased were expensive or really big.

If you’re taking the sales tax deduction, here’s how to enter the sales tax you paid:

  1. Open (continue) your return.
(To do this, sign in to TurboTax and click the orange Take me to my return button.)
  2. Do a search for where do I enter sales tax (use this exact phrase), and then click “Jump to” link in the search results.
  3. When asked how you want to enter your sales tax info:
    - Choose EasyGuide if you want us to walk you through it.
    - Or, if you’ve saved all of your receipts, you can choose Enter All My Receipts and give us the grand total.

If you can’t reach it through the “Jump to” link, go to Deductions & Credits and choose what you work on. Then go to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid. You’ll see Sales Tax in that list of topics.
