Question

I changed my charity donations, but TTax Deluxe Windows isn't updating line 10B on the 1040. The charity worksheet shows the new amount. Anyone else have this problem?

Talked TTax support, but they could not figure it out. Override is useless because it won't use the new number to recalculate the return. TTax is maybe freezing the return after the Review so it won't revise the 1040, even though it allows changes. Anyone able to help?

This is for the Windows Desktop deluxe version.

Workaround - Go to Step by Step Federal Deductions and Credits. Update the charitable contributions. It will take you to a place where it gives the standard deduction. It lists the total charity donations. Only cash and cost of travel, supplies etc are deductible if you take the standard deduction. Non cash items like clothes are only deductible if you itemize deductions. Accept the standard deduction and it will change the 1040 line 10B and update the refund or lower the amount of tax owed.

I haven't been able to get it to work if I make the entries directly on the charitable donations forms. It doesn't carry over any changes from the forms to the 1040 unless I am in Step by Step.

I have experienced the same problem where changing the cash charitable contributions using step-by-step does not carry forward into form 1040 line 10b.  The above workaround does not work for me. Have talked with TT tech support and they are investigating.

I have been able to enter and change the charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions.

In TurboTax Desktop follow these steps:

  • Across the top of the screen, click on Federal Taxes.
  • Click on Deductions & Credits.
  • At the screen How do you want to enter your deductions and credits?, click on I’ll choose what I work on.
  • Across the top of the screen Your 2020 Deductions & Credits, scroll down to the bottom and click Done with deductions.
  • You have to pass through the screen The Standard Deduction is right for you.
  • Continue until the screen Any charitable Cash Contributions?
  • Enter your charitable cash contribution.  If you enter more than $300 (Single taxpayer), your deduction will be capped at $300..
  • Click Continue.
  • Click Done with Other.
  • Across the top of the screen, click Review, then Continue.
  • After Review is complete, click Forms in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  • Select Form 1040 in the left hand column to review the entry on line 10b of the 1040.
