Question

I claimed both my children

I claimed both my kids and my boyfriend had claimed both of them last year because I hadn’t made enough money to claim them, he is only my daughter’s biological child. When I filed it says it’s rejected because one of my dependents ssn is being used on a didn’t tax return but my boyfriend hasn’t filed. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong?

Go back and verify you have the correct SSN numbers for each dependent.    If it is rejected again and you are sure you have entered the correct numbers, that means someone has filed a return with that dependent's SSN on it.   It could have been on a return your boyfriend filed (verify that he did not file a return) or someone else's (the other parent maybe) return.    If the child's SSN has already been claimed, even erroneously, you will have to file your return by mail in order to claim that child.

The IRS will process both returns that have claimed that child and will send out letters later and require whoever was not supposed to claim that child to amend their return.

What if somebody already claimed my dependent?
