Question

I did not adopt a child in 2019, but the work sheet for adoptive children keep popping up. How do I get rid of that?

Form 8839 Qualified Adoption Expenses

Here's the general procedure for viewing the forms list and deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  4. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

Please see this Help article for other Tips and tricks concerning deleting other forms that may have  transferred from last year's return.

If you're like me and adopted within the past 6 years, but not in this past tax year

TurboTax wanted me to enter an adoption we had which several years ago (which info was then used by TurboTax to determine if I had any carryforward adoption credits). Once I entered that information, I was able to move on.

The way it was worded, I kept thinking it was assuming I adopted in this past tax year and was forcing me to declare that, so I kept trying to delete or skip the step, which prevented me from e-filing. Just telling it "yes I adopted, but not this year" was enough to complete that step (and bonus: I actually did have a carryforward left over!)
