Question

I donated 520 to charity in 2019 and 2020 but my return says 520 for 2019 and 1040 for 2020. I input all the correct information, but is this right?

It depends.

Only include the amount contributed in 2020 for the 2020 return. The 2019 amount can only be included as a carryover. See: How do I enter a charitable carryover?

Charitable contributions you were eligible to deduct but were over the limit can be carried forward up to five years. For more information and to see if this applies to your circumstances, see: 2020 Publication 526: Charitable Contributions: Carryovers.

If you are taking the standard deduction rather than itemizing, however, then this carryover would not apply.

There is an opportunity to claim up to $300 for all taxpayers except married filing separate, who would each have a maximum of $150 without itemizing deductions in 2020. For more information, see IRS Charitable Contributions Deductions.
