Question

I entered an incorrect amount in the childcare portion but changing it doesn't affect our refund amount. Should I amend? Don't want to hurt our childcare provider.

I entered a significantly higher amount and don't want the IRS to come back on her when it should be less.

Yes.  To be accurate you should amend your return.  Tax law requires accurate reporting of amounts paid to service providers.  So please amend your return to correct the amount paid to the caregiver.  Good news is TurboTax will allow you to file an amended return for Free using the software.  And now you are able to electronically file the Form 1040X (Amended Return).

How to amend:

First, make sure you really need to amend and that your 2020 return was accepted in TurboTax Online or paper-filed through the mail. You can't amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.

When you're ready to amend, find your situation below and follow the instructions.

You can claim the credit for money you paid for care as long as the person you paid was not one of the following people:

  • Your spouse
  • A parent of the child being cared for—for example, you couldn't claim the credit if you pay your ex-husband or ex-wife to care for the children you have together
  • Anyone listed as a dependent on your tax return
  • Your own child age 18 or younger, regardless of whether he or she is a dependent on your tax return—for example, you couldn't pay your 17-year-old child to look after an 8-year-old sibling and then claim the credit
