I forgot that charitable donations and have not filed the taxes because we owe, but Turbo tax won't let me edit the tax forms to include charity to reduce owed amount.

If you e-filed your return and your return is pending, you won't be able to make any changes until your return is accepted or rejected by the IRS.

  • If you e-filed your income tax return(s) and:

  • They were accepted, you won't be able to edit your information You'll need to amend.
  • If your return gets rejected, you'll be able to edit. See How do I fix a rejected return?

Note: the 2019 amendment form 1040-X hasn't been released by the IRS so you won't be able to amend your tax return until then. See When will my forms be ready?

Once the forms are ready, see How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed

.

To enter your charitable contributions, you have two options:

  1. Enter your charitable donations in our free ItsDeductible program which is available year-round. When tax time comes, simply import your donations from ItsDeductible into TurboTax.
  2. Manually enter your charitable donations directly into TurboTax:
    1. Open your return in TurboTax.
    2. In the search box, search for donations and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
    3. Answer Yes to Do you want to enter your donations for 2019?
    4. Follow the instructions to enter your donations.

We didn't efile because we owe, and planned to mail it in,  in April.  We did the tax work to determine how much is needed to budget for making the tax payment.

Yes, you can still add your charitable contributions.

To open your return on TurboTax Online, go to your Tax Timeline and select Add a state to get back into your return. This will not add a state but will restore your left menu.

To access your charitable donations area, follow these steps:

  • Once the left menu is there, select Federal
  • Donations & Credits
  • Select See more tax breaks
  • Charitable Donations and click Show more
  • Donations to Charity in 2019
