I had a baby in March of 2021, why is it saying I don't qualify for the child tax credit?

@alexphan18 Sometimes it helps to delete the child and just re-enter the child in My Info and go through the screens again.  Try that and then check line 28 on your tax form.

If the system is saying you cannot claim the credit, it is likely because:

  • Your information is incorrect (missing information or you answered something wrong) Since they were born in 2021be sure to answer YES to the question, did they live with you for the entire year.
  • Your child's information is incorrect (missing information) or does not meet the criteria this year for a Qualifying Child
  • You answered that someone else is able to claim your child for 2021
  • You answered that someone else supports you or your child
  • You entered an amount equal to the total child tax credit when asked how much you already received instead of just half of the amount.

To fix this, you can go back through and verify that all information is correct. If someone else can claim you or your child for 2021, then you would not be eligible to get the remainder of the credit.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. If your child was born in 2021make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

The most common reason is because you did not indicate the child lived with you "the whole year". Read the small print on the screen that asks how long the child lived with you. Then select the child lived with you "the whole year".

I already did that. All my information is correct. It's still not showing I get it.
