Question

I had a burst pipe in my house in 2024, resulting in about !2,000 in repairs. It was not a federal disaster. All was covered by insurance except my $1,000 deductible.

Sorry----that is not deductible on your tax return.

You can no longer claim a casualty loss (miscellaneous deduction) as an itemized deduction on your federal tax return that isn't a federal disaster. This change is a part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018.  Some states may allow miscellaneous deductions.

You can visit your state’s Department of Revenue for more information.  ‌ Review the TurboTax article How do I contact my state's Department of Revenue? for more information.
