Question

I have an investment in a Real Estate Investors Trust that went bankrupt this year. I want to declare the loss this year. How do I do that? No 1099.

This would be a loss on an investment.

Follow these steps to enter your investment loss in TurboTax:

While in the Federal section of TurboTax:

  1. Income and Expenses

  2. Investment Income

  3. Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B)

  4. Indicate that you don't have a 1099-B form

  5. Choose the I'll enter one sale at a time option

  6.  Enter the sale information while making the sale amount $0

You will have a capital loss, which is deductible against other capital gains and then ordinary income up to $3,000 per year.
