Question

I have been offered a job with an office in New York City. I live in NJ. The job will entail field work throughout the East Coast. Will I have to pay NYS tax?

Yes, you will have to file a NY return, but you will not be taxed on the same income by both states.

NY taxes your New York source income.  This includes

  • services performed in New York State; and
  • a business, trade, profession, or occupation carried on in New York State

And while New Jersey requires that you report all of your income, including what you earned in New York, they'll give you a credit for your New York taxes so you don't get double-taxed.

"The job will entail field work throughout the East Coast."

This will only get you out of NY tax, if you want to go to the hassle of filing tax returns for every state you work in. See http://money.cnn.com/2013/06/28/pf/taxes/business-traveler-tax-threat/

Ask your employer how he will handle state withholding.  If he intends to withhold NYS tax on all your salary; you may have difficulty convincing NY that you actually earned it in other states.
