Maybe.  It is suggested by the Internal Revenue Service, tax experts, and professionals the best method to determine if Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately is more advantageous is to prepare "dummy" tax returns. In particular if you are in a community property state because your income and deductions are split between you and your spouse.

You can prepare a Married Filing Jointly return in TurboTax then clear it after extracting the amount of income tax owing or a refund forthcoming. You can then return to the program and input the information as a Married Filing Separately individual.  Again, following these instructions will ensure you are maximizing your deductions and credits.
