Question

I have two 1099-B forms from the Dow/Dupont split. Each states that 0.666667 shares have been sold. No cost basis is given. How do I come up with a number?

Dupont 1099-B states "REVERSE SPLIT CASH-IN-LIEU sold @" and Dow states "SPN OFF CIL - C01 (CUSIP: XXXXXX103) SOLD @". Do I need a cost basis amount?

see this document for the long explanation of how to allocate basis to the frac shares sold.   note that some taxpayers choose to ignore basis allocation especially when only a few dollars are involved (this is the wrong way but the IRS seldom does anything)
