This could be as simple as not checking the correct box for the Child.  I sugges following these instructions and go back to re-enter the dependent information for the child that is not receiving the credit.  Or both if you cannot distinguish.

You can return to the Child Tax Credit section as long as you have not yet filed your tax return. If you made a mistake entering information concerning the Child Tax Credit:

If the mistake has to do with incorrect entry regarding a dependent, such as their age, go to  My Info in the left side panel and on the Personal Info Summary page go through the personal information screens, correcting the information you previously entered incorrectly.

You can also delete the Forms and re-enter the information, to delete:

  • Click on "Tax Tools >Tools" in the left panel
  • Click on "Tools" from the drop-down list
  • In the Tools Center pop up window select "Delete a form"
  • Delete Schedule 8812 Child Tax Credit Worksheet.
  • You will also need to delete the Dependent Information Worksheet for the child you made the mistake on and re-enter that child's information.

Note: This will completely eliminate the credit and you will have to re-enter the information to get the credit back.

Please keep in mind that doing this will eliminate the credit and you will have to re-enter the information you need to get that credit back. If whatever you entered initially resulted in the software saying you were not getting any credit at all, then the worksheet won't exist for you to delete, and you will have to revisit the Personal Information Summary section.

Please be sure you re-enter all the correct information in order for the credit to generate.

Are you sure both dependents qualify?  To qualify for the Child Tax Credit, your child must fit all of these requirements:

  • Be under age 17 at the end of the tax year
  • Is your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, adopted child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, a grandchild, niece, or nephew)
  • Has his or her own Social Security Number
  • Lived with you for more than half the year
  • Didn't support him/herself (i.e., didn't pay more than half their own expenses)
  • Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien

Additionally, you must have tax liability for the credit to be applied to.  If you do not, you may qualify for the Additional Child Tax Credit.

Thank you for the quick reply.  Both my kids fit every requirement.  Where would I find the tax liability to see if the other child qualifies?

If one of the children was born in 2020, be sure to indicate that he/she lived with you all year.
