Question

I installed solar panels on my California home in 2017 and am supposed to get a carry forward amount. Where do I see that on my forms?

If you used TurboTax for 2017 and 2018, The unused portion of your 2017 Energy Credit should have flowed into your 218 return and then into 2019.  You can check/enter the carryover of the energy credit by using these steps:

TurboTax Online

  1. On the Deductions & Credits screen, in the Your Home section, click the Start/Revisit box next to Home Energy Credits.
  2. On the screen, Energy-Saving Home Improvements, at the bottom of the screen, answer Yes to the question Did you make energy-savings improvements in 2019 or have a carryforward from 2018?
  3. Continue to the screen, Do You Have a 2018 Home Energy Credit to Carry Forward? click the Yes radio button and enter the 2018 Energy Credit Carryforward in the box that appears.
  4. The amount of the allowable Energy Credit for 2019 will appear on line 5 of Schedule 3 of your 1040.

TurboTax CD/Download

If you are using the CD/Download version, you can see the amount of the credit carried over from 2018 on the Carryover Worksheet.  To view the Carryover Worksheet, please follow these steps:

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar
  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, click Carryover Worksheet.
  3. The energy credit carryover will appear on line 23 (p. 3).
  4. To return to the interview, click the Step-by-Step link in the top right of the blue bar
