I live with my boyfriend, who owns a home, and we have a daughter. He claims her, but I pay for her preschool. TurboTax is not allowing me to enter her child care expense

I get this reason at the close of the section after answering "yes" for paying for care.
"It looks like you haven't entered any care expenses yet.
If you did pay for dependent care, go back and enter that info to see if this amount changes."

She was not an available choice to enter information, but according to the qualifications, I do qualify to claim this expense.

You must have physical custody of your daughter for more than half the year to claim the Child and Dependent Care Credit. In order to let TurboTax know your situation:

  • You must enter your daughter in the Personal Info section of TurboTax.
  • You'll go through all of the questions, indicating that she lived with you.
  • You will check that you have an agreement with her other parent and that he will claim her as a dependent.
  •  Don't say that you provided more than half the cost to keep up the home, unless you actually did.
  • When you go back to the Child and Dependent Care Credit, you should see her name listed.
