As a self-employed independent contractor, you can either take the standard mileage rate or the actual cost method, which tracks what you paid for gas and maintenance.

If you are using TurboTax Self-Employed Online version, your mileage goes on Schedule C and you can go directly to that section using the steps below.

NOTE: If you are using TurboTax CD/Download Home & Business - Follow these instructions to enter your expenses.

  • Log into your return and click Take me to my return
  • Click on Federal to the left and you should be under Income & Expenses section
  • Click Start (or Review) next to Self-employment income and expenses section
  • Then click Review (or Edit) next to the business you are entering expenses for
  • Scroll down and click Start/Review next to Vehicle
  • Answer all questions until you get to Let's get some info about how you tracked your business and personal miles in 2017
  • Answer Yes to Did you document the miles you drove for this business? and answer second question on that page
  • Next page asks How do you want to enter your mileage for your (your car xx)?
  • Once you choose one of those options, it will allow you to input your mileage
