Yes, we can help you with that. But, the answer depends on what kind of property taxes.

 

For personal property taxes (Schedule A):

  • All real estate taxes paid for property you own are deductible when you itemize deductions on your tax return. 
    • There is a new rule, due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, that limits a combination of taxes to a maximum of $10,000.
      • The combination of taxes: 
        • The greater of Sales tax OR State and local income taxes paid through the tax year
        • Real estate taxes
        • Personal property taxes

For business property taxes (Schedule C or Schedule E):

  • Real estate taxes paid are deductible as an expense in the business. Where this is reported depends on the type of business entity.
