Question

I opened an HSA acc.in 2020 and made contribution for 2019. What is the answer to the question Tell us about the health accounts you had in 2019-HSA or none of the above?

If I answer None of the above the program still retains the amount of contribution but without asking me to enter it. I wonder where that information is coming from.

I am not sure what you are asking - did you mean you entered the contribution once and on another pass, you answered that you didn't have an HSA in 2019 so wondered why the program didn't delete the contribution you entered on the previous pass?

TurboTax does tend to hang on to numbers, especially in the HSA section, even when you have changed input and maybe thought the numbers should go away.

First, let me ask you - did you have HDHP coverage in 2019? If so, you were allowed, as I guess you know, to make a contribution in 2020 (prior to July 15th) for 2019.

In this case, you answer the equivalent of "HSA" to the question of "tell us about your health accounts", because, as you note, if you don't say that you had an HSA, you won't see the questions you need to answer.

Two catches: (1) when you make the contribution, you must tell the HSA custodian it is for 2019 or else they will mark it as for 2020, and (2) you enter the contribution on the "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions" screen on the second line where it asks for personal contributions.

Does that cover your issue?
