If you did not receive a refund of this overpayment (which is unlikely), you can claim it as property tax payment in 2017. This overpayment may reduce your 2018 local property tax bill, in which case, next year's federal deduction will be less.
You'll enter Real Estate Property Tax in the Deductions & Credits section:
- Open (continue) your tax return.
(To do this, sign in to TurboTax and click the Take me to my return button.) - In the search box, search for "real estate taxes" and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.
- Answer Yes to the question Did you pay property or real estate taxes in 2017?
- Enter your property/real estate taxes on the next screen.
TurboTax Mobile App - Use these instructions to enter the property or real estate taxes you paid.
TurboTax CD/Download - Use these instructions.
To go directly to where you enter Personal Property (Vehicle) Taxes:
- Open (continue) your return in TurboTax, and select the Take Me to My Return button on the main screen.
- In the Search box, search for personal property taxes and select the “Jump to” link.
- Answer Yes to Did you pay personal property taxes in 2017?
- On the How much did you pay in personal property taxes during 2017? page, fill in the Personal property tax paid, and select Continue.
To qualify for this deduction, the personal property taxes you paid must have been:
- Charged on personal property you own
- Based only on the value of the personal property
- Charged on an annual basis (regardless of how often it’s collected)
