Question

I pay for my child's care but my partner will be claiming the child; they have a higher income. However, I still want to receive credit for my contributions. How?

If you and your partner live together with your child, only the parent that is claiming the child can claim the child care credit.

If your child lives with you but not your partner, you would be able to claim your child for child care credit and earned income credit (if applicable). Your partner would get the child tax credit. They would need to make sure that they indicate that your child did not live with them. Otherwise your return would be rejected.
