Question

I qualify for a deduction on my HSA. When I use form 8889, the deduction is close to $3,000, but turbotax says I get nothing. They are missing something. What can I do?

It depends. Did you personally contribute or did your employer make the contribution through payroll deductions?  If your employer made the contribution, this money is pretax money thus is not taxable income on your return. You cannot claim a contribution made with pretax dollars through payroll deductions.

However, if you made your own contributions to the plan with your after tax dollars, go back and check your qualifying answers to these questions.

  • Were you covered by Medicare during the year? if you were, you are not qualified for the deduction. If you weren't, mark this answer no.
  • The next question asked if you were covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). If you weren't covered by at least one month during the year, then the contribution will not be allowed.
  • Next question will ask if you overfunded your HSA. The answer should be no.

Check your answers to these questions to see if your contribution is allowed.
