Question

I received the advanced child tax credit payments but my refund didn't go down. I don't want to have to repay. does it show when you file?

Yes, it will show when you file.   Go through all the Child Tax Credit questions to be sure.   Search for child tax credit and use the Jump to child tax credit link to go back there.   TurboTax started out assuming you got the payments so you should not see the refund meter drop when you enter the amounts.   That is normal.

You can look at your tax return, Line 28 to see your tax credit you are claiming on this return.   It should be the amount of your tax credit, less the amounts you already received.   You can get up to

  • $3,600 per qualifying child under 6
  • $3,000 per qualifying child age 6–17

if your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is less than,

  • $150,000 if you're Married Filing Jointly or a Qualifying Widow
  • $112,500 if you're filing as Head of Household, or
  • $75,000 if you're Married Filing Separately or Single
