I recently put in new flooring in my daycare and was wondering if it was deductible?

    Yes, installing new flooring in your daycare can be deductible. The way to deduct it might differ depending on where the location of your daycare is.  Either way, since the floor is considered a property improvement, it'll need to be depreciated.

     

    If your daycare is in your home, you can get the Home Office Deduction. This lets you claim a part of your home expenses based on the area of your home that is used for the daycare and in your case the amount of time your home operates as a daycare.  Another factor that will affect your deduction is if the flooring was installed on a section of the home that is only used for ‌the daycare or if it is in an area of the home that is used for both personal and daycare purposes. There are also two different methods to claim your home office deduction, the actual method and the simplified method.  For more information see the following TurboTax help article:

    If you rent or own the building where your daycare is located, then you would also be able to claim the expense.  You would be entered directly on the form you use to report your business, like a Schedule C if you are a sole proprietor, or a Form 1065 if you are a partnership.  Again, since the floors are a property improvement, the expense will have to be entered under depreciation.
