Question

I should be getting $2000 for each of my three children, but Turbotax is only giving me credit for $500 per child. How do I correct this???

I am only using the standard deduction and not itemizing, and I don't make more than $50k per year.

    Are they over age 16?

You need to go through all 3 children's dependent interviews and make sure all questions are answered completely and accurately.  You can click on My Info or Personal Info (depending on your platform) to see the dependents you have entered on your tax return.

If there is any incorrect or missing information, they will show as Other Dependents.   The children have to be under age 17 to get the full Child Tax Credit of $2K.    That link has all the requirements listed.   Make sure all social security numbers are entered.

    Qualifying child:

    • They're related to you.
    • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
    • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
    • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
    • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
      • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
    • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
    • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Do the children have Social Security numbers?    Are they all under the age of 17?

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2024 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

Sometimes it helps to delete the dependent and re-enter them in MY INFO.

Look at your 2024 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received
