If you used your home as your personal residence and did not rent it out at any time and/or take a home office deduction while living there, you do not need to report the loss on your tax return.

Losses on the sale of personal use assets like a house are not deductible for tax purposes.

If you have rented your property or taken a home office deduction, the amounts of depreciation that you took in prior years will reduce your basis in the home and will decrease the amount of the loss.
