I thought the child tax credit applied if the child was 16 for over 6 months my kid didnt turn 17 until august.

It is based on age at year end. If the child was 17 on Dec. 31, the child doesn't qualify for child tax credit.

If your child turned 17 in 2016, even on the last day of 2016, you do not get the child tax credit.  There are no exceptions to the rule.  You can still claim your child as a dependent.
