I thought this year charitable deductions were an above the line deduction even if you took standard deduction?

Yes, that is true, up to a max of $300 of deductions. There are a types of deductions that don't qualify but those are not common (donations to supporting orgs and donor-advised funds).

 

The deduction should show up on 1040 line 10b,
