I want to know how old do I have to be to receive the American opportunity credit?

The issue is not your age, but whether you are

  • Enrolled in a degree or certification program,
  • Enrolled in an eligible school 
  • At least a half-time student
  • Have not already claimed the American Opportunity Credit plus the Hope Credit for four years.

If you are 16 or 90 and fit the other qualifications, then you may qualify for the AOC.

If you are 16, still in high school and taking a college course or two, you won't qualify because you aren't yet enrolled in a degree program.

If  you are still a dependent, then your parents receive the credit.
