Please help.  I agreed to host a fancy dinner for ten people who won an auction event.  The auction raised several thousand dollars (close to $10,000).  I am putting in a couple hundred to go toward the dinner for the guests.  I received a letter stating that I had made a contribution for the dinner but there is no dollar amount mentioned.  How much do I enter in that I donated?  A few thousand or a few hundred?  I am confused!

You can deduct the amount you spend on the dinner yourself, in the year you actually spend it.  You cannot deduct the amount that was raised.  You should submit your receipts to the charitable organization and ask them for another letter - one that has the amount of your donation.
