If I already got my taxes back but don't think I applied for the home heating credit can I still do that?

I never entered the amount I paid in consumers for the year and I thought I needed that information

Yes, if you filed your income tax return(s), got your refund, and this is a credit you can get on your income tax return, you can amend your return to see if it results in an additional refund.

If this is for the Michigan Home Heating Credit, there are a number of ways you can apply for the Home Heating Credit – and you don’t need to file a Michigan tax return to do so. To get an applications for the Home Heating Credit (Form MI-1040CR-7) you can:

  • Visit the Michigan Department of Treasury website at michigan.gov/treasury and enter “Home Heating Credit” in the search box.
  • Pick up a paper copy at a public library, post office, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) office or other locations where income tax forms are available.
  • Call the Department of Treasury at 517-636-4486.
  • If you are hearing- or speech-impaired, contact the Michigan Relay Center, 800-649-2777 or 7-1-1.

The Home Heating Credit is a way the State of Michigan helps people who are qualified homeowners or renters pay some of their heating expenses.

  • In some cases for renters, the monthly amount of food assistance received may be increased if a household has received a Home Heating Credit of more than $20 in the current month or any of the previous 12 months. This would typically affect some renters whose heat is included in their rent.
